As Arlington prepares to host the FIFA World Cup 2026™, City teams are working to ensure the community is ready to shine — not just for visitors, but for the residents who call Arlington home.
In the second episode of Arlington Welcomes the World, City leaders highlight ongoing beautification and sustainability efforts across parks, roadways and public spaces.
The Parks and Recreation Department has been laying the groundwork for years, focusing on key areas like the Entertainment District and major corridors across the city.
“The world’s coming — and we need to be ready,” said Parks Director Gary Packan. “We’re taking what we already do every day and giving it that extra polish because Arlington is on a global stage.”
Recent improvements include enhanced landscaping, upgraded maintenance efforts and new public art installations, along with large-scale planting initiatives. The City has already planted more than 1,300 plants along major corridors and continues to expand tree planting across Arlington.
“We’re planting things that are going to be here for 50, 100 years,” Assistant Parks Director Michael Debrecht said. “Long after FIFA is gone next year, these corridors will remain. We’ll continue maintaining them at a high level—ensuring they’re beautiful not just for a global event, but for our residents every day.”
These efforts extend beyond the Entertainment District, ensuring neighborhoods and major roadways across Arlington reflect the same level of care and pride.
Sustainability is also a key focus as Arlington prepares to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors. Meghna Tare, Chief Sustainability Officer for the North Texas FIFA World Cup organizing committee, said hosting an event of this scale requires a coordinated effort to reduce environmental impact while engaging the entire community.
“When you have a mega event of this magnitude, the environmental impact can be massive — our role is to reduce that impact for the community as a whole,” Tare said.
Efforts include reducing waste, conserving resources, improving air quality and expanding green spaces, all while working closely with cities, local organizations and businesses. Programs like the Green Business Certification are helping highlight companies that are already leading in sustainability.
For Tare, the goal goes beyond the six-week tournament. It’s about creating lasting change in how the community thinks about sustainability.
“My goal is to make sure that after the last whistle is blown, we still continue the work,” she said. “That’s where the real impact happens — when these efforts become part of everyday life in our community.”

Former executive director Blake Bowman pleaded guilty to misusing Camp Thurman funds in 2021 and 2022.
Bowman, who oversaw the Christian camp in Pantego for eight years, was arrested in 2024 and charged with misapplication of property as a fiduciary and theft of property, each valued at $300,000 or more.
Prosecutors showed transactions totaling more than $1 million, according to court filings. It is unclear how much they allege Bowman stole or misapplied.
Bowman entered an open plea in late February, meaning he pleaded guilty to both first-degree felony counts. His sentencing will be decided by the court at a later date.
A conviction on each charge could carry a punishment of five to 99 years in prison, along with fines.
Bowman’s lawyer declined to comment. The Tarrant County district attorney’s office declined to comment because the case is pending.
Court filings show Bowman was accused of using credit cards intended for camp expenses to pay personal expenses and connecting his PayPal account to Camp Thurman’s bank account.
State officials also found evidence from Camp Thurman and OnlyFans, an adult-subscription service, according to a February 2025 court filing.
In a June 27 filing, officials from the district attorney’s office said they learned during a witness meeting with camp leadership that Bowman made payments to the camp amounting to about $2,800 between March 2024 and May 2025. The filings did not disclose what the payments were for.
Bowman was indicted in April 2024 and arrested about a month later. He posted bail but then was reindicted in January 2025 after new information about the embezzlement allegations surfaced.
Bowman took a job in Weatherford ISD as a fourth-grade teacher in late 2022, where he worked until May 2023, district officials confirmed.
Later that year, he taught in Burleson ISD. Bowman resigned Aug. 21, 2025, Burleson ISD spokesperson Katelyn Tyler previously told the Arlington Report.
Bowman’s teacher certification is under review, Texas Education Agency confirmed, adding that they could not comment further as the investigation is active.

Lincoln Square is one step closer to becoming Anthem, after the Arlington City Council and Arlington Economic Development Corporation (EDC) approved an incentive agreement with the EDC to help fund public infrastructure as part of the project.
Trademark has committed to investing at least $100 million in the project, not including tenant build-outs. As part of the agreement, the EDC will provide up to approximately $24.5 million in funding to reimburse eligible public infrastructure improvements such as utilities, lighting, landscaping, pavement, demolition, and public amenities.
Residents could see construction activity as soon as mid-2026 and new businesses opening by early 2027, with substantial completion by 2030.
Trademark has agreed to securing new leases for at least 70,000 square feet of retail space from sales tax-generating businesses. The project will also include façade upgrades, new tenant spaces, parking lot improvements, enhanced entryways, and plaza areas designed for community use.
Located on the southwest corner of Collins Street and Interstate 30 near the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys stadiums, Anthem will serve as a gateway to Arlington’s Entertainment District for both residents and its 15 million-plus visitors.
The reimagined shopping center will function as a convenient meetup spot between Dallas and Fort Worth, a pre-and-post event destination in the Entertainment District and a prime addition to retail and restaurant options in the north Arlington area.
“Lincoln Square has been an important part of Arlington’s retail landscape for more than 40 years, and this project represents a strategic reinvestment in one of our community’s cornerstone assets,” said Marty Wieder, Executive Director of the EDC. “Anthem will reposition the property as a modern, high-quality destination with national restaurants and retailers, experiential concepts and inviting public spaces."
Over the next 30 years, Anthem is projected to result in $6 billion in taxable sales and purchases, $305 million in salaries and wages, and a $29 million fiscal net benefit to the City.
"This partnership allows us to strengthen neighborhood vitality, generate significant long-term economic benefits, and do so without issuing new city debt or raising taxes,” Wieder said. “It’s exactly the kind of public-private collaboration that supports Arlington’s continued growth and quality of life.”
