ST. LOUIS — Plans have been approved for the St. Louis area’s sixth Costco store.
The Lake Saint Louis Board of Aldermen voted Dec. 15 to approve a special use permit and site plan for the new Costco Warehouse and gas station, which would be built at Lake Saint Louis Boulevard and Hawk Ridge Circle, off Interstate 64.
The 195,000-square-foot store would be the St. Louis area’s fifth Costco Warehouse store and its sixth overall, including the Costco Business Center that opened in 2023 in St. John. The other locations are in St. Peters, which is the closest to Lake Saint Louis; Manchester; South County; and University City, which opened in October 2022.
Construction is expected to start as soon as spring 2026 and finish by summer 2027. Costco (Nasdaq: COST) declines to comment on stores that are more than three months from opening.
The Lake Saint Louis Costco would be unique among local stores because the retailer proposes a warehouse area of about 25,000 square feet in the back of the store, which would be in the same building but function separately from the store. The warehouse would serve Costco’s Market Daily Operations for the area, the retailer said in city filings. The gas station is proposed to have 12 pumps, with future expansion available for four more.
The future Costco property, which the Seattle-based retailer has under contract, totals 27.43 acres. The city annexed the agricultural site in 1993 as part of a larger 175-acre undeveloped plot known as the Muk property.
In city filings, Costco did not mention development costs or jobs associated with the project. The development would have 940 parking spaces, including 43 reserved in the back for MDO employees, Costco said.
Feedback from residents on the project has been mixed, Mayor Brian McKinney told Mid-Rivers Newsmagazine. Residents closest to the project have been concerned about the extra traffic it will create, but residents who live farther away are excited about it, he said. The project passed 5-1, with one alderman voting against it.
Costco, based in Issaquah, Washington, is the third-largest global retailer, behind Walmart and Amazon. It has about 632 locations in the U.S. and more than 800 worldwide.
