The Texas Department of Transportation is preparing to break ground on a traffic signal installation project at a busy Wise County intersection.
For one mother, the added safety measure is not only long overdue, it’s too late.
“Mateo was light. Matteo would light up every room he went in,” said Maria Rodriguez Hernandez. “He was always happy. He was so light. He was so full of love.”
The bright light that was her 8-year-old son Matteo was forever dimmed on Thursday, January 22.
He had almost made it home from school with his grandmother, said Hernandez.
Her mother drove up to the busy intersection along Texas 114 and Alliance Boulevard in Rhome.
Cars and trucks were buzzing in both directions.
“The person that was in front of that line kind of like waved my mom like, ‘hey you have time, you have time go,’” said Hernandez. “She just trusted that person and she just like continue her way into our neighborhood and that's when a semi-truck weighing about half a ton impacted Mateo's door.”
Despite her child being buckled in his car seat, his injuries were catastrophic.
The Prairie View Elementary School student could not be saved.
A grief-stricken Hernandez believes her son's death could have been prevented.
“Only if they would have, like, listened the first time,” she said. “It was a matter of time.”
For years, Hernandez says neighbors have been pleading for TxDOT to install a traffic signal near their subdivision.
Rhome’s City Administrator, Amanda Degan, provided NBC 5, Telemundo 39 a statement, reading in part:
Our Council has been interested in a traffic control device at this intersection for a while. It is an important issue for our residents and one that I hope your story will bring some recognition to and assist us in raising awareness with the Texas Department of Transportation. It has been almost two (2) years since we sent that notification to the agency and we do not have an update on the traffic light even though we have been told that it ‘warrants’ on in this area.
TxDOT confirms a traffic signal is coming. TxDOT’s northwest Texas communications director, Shawna Russell Jones, provided this update on the signal:
The signal has been issued to contract, and the contractor is currently procuring materials. The estimated start date for construction is late March/early April of this year. The signal project being constructed will include illumination and multiple sets of advanced warning signs.
When it comes to previous crashes at the intersection, TxDOT said: We have no record of there being any prior vehicle fatality crash.

Hernandez, a kindergarten teacher at Prairie View Elementary, has received an outpouring of support from the community and her school.
"They're making this path that I'm going through a little bit more easy," she said.
She has also turned her grief into action.
Seeking out to local and state leaders seeking changes, Hernandez started an online petition demanding construction be prioritized, amassing over 10,000 signatures so far.
A change that did not help her son, but will hopefully protect other children and families.
Funeral services are being held on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Hernandez shared details of the final moments she had with Matteo in her classroom before he left with his grandma.
“He said mom, can I have it now,” she recalls.
It was a small red and black ladybug plush animal that a student gifted Ms. Hernandez.
He had noticed the small toy that morning and asked if he could take the ladybug with him for a while. Insistent, Matteo asked again once school let out.
“And I'm like, OK, baby, just go grab it. Put it in your pocket, and then he left with my mom,” she remembers.
Hernandez would see Matteo and the ladybug again, at the hospital.
“When we got to the hospital, they gave us the news that he passed. They asked us if we wanted to see him one more time,” said Hernandez. “When I entered that room, he was laying on the bed. He looked like he was sleeping. But I noticed that he had the lady bug sitting on one of his shoulders. And the only thing I could think of is he made sure…. I'm sorry. That hits hard… He made sure the ladybug came back to me, but at that point, I didn't want it. I didn't care about the ladybug, I just cared about him. So she came back, but he didn't.”
